Are Tampons A Source of Exposure To Metals?
The answer, according to a 2024 study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, is yes. The study revealed measurable levels of toxic metals including lead and arsenic in a variety of popular tampon brands.
The researchers tested 30 tampons across 14 brands and found 12 out of 16 metals they were looking for. Here is the part that really stopped us in our tracks. Lead was present in every single tampon tested. Every single one. And as the researchers noted, there is no safe level of lead exposure. Even tiny amounts can accumulate in the body over time, settling into bones and staying there for decades. It has been linked to neurological issues, kidney problems, cardiovascular disease, reproductive challenges, and developmental concerns. Even low level exposure has been associated with decreased attention, memory problems, and impaired learning in both adults and children.
